1. | Are Graduates considered as members of the Institute? | No. Graduates hold a temporary Graduateship grade whilst members of the Institute hold the Associateship or Fellowship grades. However, graduates may be able to apply to become an Associate or Fellow member upon completion of the required number of years of relevant working experience. |
2. | How long can I remain as a Graduate of the Institute before I apply for election to Associateship? | A Graduate shall seek election to membership within ten years of being admitted as a Graduate subject to conditions imposed in the CGI Charter and Bye-Laws. |
3. | What are the general requirements for election to Associateship? | You are eligible to apply for election to Associateship if you have: All applications are subject to the Membership Committee’s approval, the decision of which is final. |
4. | Does the 6 years’ membership requirement refer strictly to MAICSA membership requirements or does it take into account membership period accumulated for other divisions of CGI? | It can be the accumulation from both MAICSA and other divisions of CGI. |

6. | I am currently a student of the Institute, can I apply for election to Associateship? | No. Registered students of the Institute must complete the CGQP programme and become a Graduate before they are eligible to apply. The Institute will not proceed with the applications made by any registered students. |
7. | Can I submit my application form and pay at a later date? | All applications have to be submitted together with payment via cheque/bank draft, payable to “MAICSA” or credit card. |
8. | Do I need to attend an interview before becoming a MAICSA member? | No. All applications will be tabled at the Membership Committee Meeting for approval. |
9. | What kind of work experience is considered as relevant? | The following are considered as relevant working experience for applying the Associateship grade: |
10. | If I do not have six years of relevant working experience, can I apply for election to Associateship? | Applicants who possess a recognised full-time degree qualification will be granted a reduction in the years of relevant working experience. The reduction period is granted based on the duration of full-time degree study, and subject to a maximum of three years. |
11. | If I have already gained six years of relevant working experience from my previous employment(s), do I need to provide the current employment information? | Yes, applicants are required to provide the current employment information for the Membership Committee’s consideration. |

15. | When does the membership year start? | The annual subscription is due every year on 1 January. | ||||||||||||||
16. | How do I retain my Graduateship/Membership of the Institute? | As mentioned in the Bye-Laws, one should promptly pay the subscriptions and all other monies due under any regulations made by the Council. A grace period of up to six months for payment of the subscription may be given by the Council, during which period the member will retain his/her membership rights. If a member does not pay the requisite subscription when it is due, his/her membership will lapse resulting in the name being removed from the membership register. A lapsed member is not allowed describe himself/herself as a Chartered Secretary, use the designatory letters or use the MAICSA membership number for any purpose. |

18. | How will I be informed of the annual subscription due? | With effect from January 2019, invoices for annual subscription are sent to members via e-mail only. Please check your inbox and/or the junk folders to retain the document. You are further advised to whitelist the email ID from the junk folder to the inbox to ensure future correspondences sent by the Institute are received in the Inbox only. |
19. | Will I be able to get a copy of the receipt(s) for all payment(s) made to the Institute? | Yes. On full payment being made, an E-receipt will be automatically forwarded to your email account for reference. |
20. | Can invoice(s)/receipt(s) be issued under the company name? | As per the regulations provided by the Customs Department, the Institute will only issue any invoices and/or receipts under the individual’s and not the name of a company. However, please be advised on the following: Member A member can deduct a subscription paid from your income tax (if no reimbursement from the company). Company A company may reimburse their employee however they would not be able to claim input tax under SST. However, the company can show this as an expense in their Profit & Loss account and this is an allowable expense under income tax. |

21. | Is my membership transferrable? | Yes. You can apply to transfer your membership across nine divisions of CGI provided you are ordinarily resident in that divisional territory. A member should send a written request of membership transfer to the Institute and provide the correspondence address of the residential country, which should be one of the divisions of CGI. Upon receipt of the request, the Institute will arrange the transfer of your membership with the other division accordingly. |

22. | I am a former member/graduate of the Institute, what are the procedures and fees for re-election to membership/ graduateship? | Lapsed Members/Graduates for a period three years and above are required to apply for re-election to their membership and remit the outstanding payments together with the re-election fee. You will also be required to obtain a specific number of CPD hours by attending any seminars/workshops organised by Institute or any professional bodies. Seminars/workshops attended for the last twenty-four months are also accepted. |

Am I still eligible for such rate? | You should inform the Institute immediately of any change in circumstances which may affect your entitlement of the retired fee. Such members may no longer be eligible to the retired category and required to pay the subscription at full rate. |
